Depression hurts and it impacts a lot of people:

In one year, more than 16 million Americans will experience some form of depression.  Depression is one of the most common problems people seek counseling for.  Depression comes in many forms, including Adjustment Disorders, Major Depressive Disorders, and Persistent Depressive Disorder.  Some people experience depression as a result of a specific event that happened, like a death in the family, or another life changing event. For others, depression can be more persistent and consistent throughout their lives, despite the circumstances around them.

Symptoms of depression include sleep problems, loss of interest in activities, feelings of guilt, lack of energy, problems with concentration and cognition, appetite, feeling agitated or lethargic, and suicidal thoughts/behaviors.

Depression is treatable by using evidenced based treatments.  Finding a therapist who uses these types of treatments and offers an empathetic stance can help you to reduce the symptoms of depression.

With Depression Treatment, you can feel more in control of your life and your emotions

Depression treatment is very effective and can be helpful for you.  Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is one of the most effective treatments.  In Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, CBT for short, you will learn how your thoughts lead to feelings and behaviors. You will learn the most common unhealthy thinking patterns that lead to feelings of depression, sadness, and emptiness.  After learning to recognize your thinking patterns, you will learn to apply skills to modify those unhealthy thinking patterns and behaviors.  CBT helps clients look at their thoughts and behaviors from a different lens.  Many times in CBT, you will be given homework to address the topics you learned in therapy at home. The wonderful part of CBT is you learn to apply these principles yourself.

During depression treatment, you will learn to use healthy coping strategies to manage your depression. Exercise, eating healthy, and sleep hygiene will be a focus of depression counseling.  Some other coping strategies may include mindfulness, journaling, deep breathing exercises, and self-care.

You will learn how to incorporate and utilize these skills in order to better manage your depression. By using evidenced based practices, including CBT you can create change in your life and get control of your depression.

Will we spend a lot of time talking about my childhood?

Your childhood will probably come up in therapy but it won’t be the main focus of treatment for depression. It will be important to look for any trends in your family related to depression and other mental illnesses.  Belief systems are influenced by how you grew up, the family members you were around and the experiences you had as a child. It’s important to explore any dynamics that led to the formation of belief systems and thought patterns that helped to develop unhealthy thinking patterns that has led to depression.  However, with CBT the main focus will be on your current thinking patterns, your symptoms that are present now and ways to help you in the here and now.
